2nd Engineer
Job Role and Responsibilities
The Role
This position is based in the UK and open only to British Passport Holders. The 2nd Engineer is appointed to support the Chief Engineer and, should the need arise, be able to act as Chief Engineer of the vessel. This role reports directly to the Chief Engineer.
Responsibilities
- Have sole responsibility during a watch period for the Engine Room as a ‘Watch-keeping’ Engineer
- Keep the Chief Engineer informed of any changes affecting the ships equipment
- Be able to replace the Chief Engineer should the need arise
- Carry out a normal Engine Watch following Chief Engineers written instructions and recording such information as may be required to continue the safe operation of the ship’s systems
- Responsible for the maintenance of specific Engine Room equipment as detailed by the Chief Engineer e.g. Main Engines
- Work on technical equipment or installations to ensure good and safe operation
- Oversee the training of Junior Engineers and Engine Room staff.
- Attend to duties or training as requested by the Master or his Senior Officers to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the vessel.
- Any other duties as required.
