Certification Officer

Job Role and Responsibilities

Your role within the Seafarer Training and Certification Branch will be to assess applications from seafarers for marine examinations, leading to the issue of a Certificate of Competency or Flag State Endorsement. You will provide related advice and assistance to applicants and existing Certificate holders.

This is partly a customer-facing role where you will help deliver a high customer service level, ensuring that all certificates issued comply with relevant legislative requirements and are issued accurately and on time.

You will contribute and provide support for other administrative tasks and will be called upon to assist other teams with their workloads when required.

Additional Information

We are following current government guidelines and working remotely, if successful you will be provided with IT equipment to carry out your duties remotely. You may be required to work from the office on a rotational basis. Once we are able to return to the office, we will provide you with full notice of this.

Responsibilities

As part of your role you will:

  • receive, open and record all incoming mail, including fax and e-mail
  • assess and process applications to enable seafarers to sit Merchant Navy Yacht and Fishing Vessel Deck and Engineer oral examinations
  • assess applications from seafarers for Global Maritime Distress & Safety System endorsements, re-validations and for Vessel Traffic Services (VTS).
  • issue appropriate notices of eligibility (NOE) or notices of assessment (NOA) or assist with the issue of the Letters of Initial of Assessment (LIA) to seafarers who are eligible to sit an oral examination
  • issue Certificates of Competency/Flag State Endorsements to seafarers who meet the qualification criteria
  • answer telephone enquiries and reply to written enquiries relating to the certification of seafarers
  • contribute to and provide support for other administrative tasks such as branch projects, customer service initiatives and improvement of working practices

 

Skills

You will have experience working in a similar role or busy office environment, working effectively unsupervised and as part of a team. You will be used to producing large volumes of work quickly and accurately, able to manage deadlines and meet targets without compromising on quality.

You’ll also have experience of delivering excellent customer service and will be confident communicating with customers face-to-face and via telephone and email. You’ll also have demonstrable IT skills and be used to using Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel and Access.

You are an effective multi-tasker, who is proactive in developing your skills and knowledge, so you can support the wider business in meeting its objectives.
