Chief Naval Architect

Job Responsibilities

SUMMARY: Responsible for the direction, interpretation and implementation of the Company’s procedures and guidelines in a position that requires a very high level of naval architecture and marine engineering knowledge. Senior-most technical focused engineer in the organization, whose mandate is first and foremost to help the organization to improve designs, avoid technical mistakes, solve technical problems and train/mentor technical staff.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Work with Director of Commercial, Operations and the Director of Project Management for overall management of projects, including customer relationships and commercial success. Identify technical-related and regulatory-related project risks, implement mitigation strategies, and ensure projects sufficiently and capably staffed to ensure project technical goals are met. Engineering functional teams report to this position. Technical oversight of functional team’s work including the technical oversight of projects. Ensure best-practice, adherence to process, and standardization across the functional teams. Coach, mentor, apply lessons learned and train staff to improve technical competency across the functional teams. Stay on top of industry trends, new technologies, and sustainability initiatives for purposes of translating these things into new designs and offerings for Crowley Engineering Services. The senior-most technical subject matter expert of the engineering organization, they will be course of consultation and advice to senior leadership.

Skills

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree required. Naval Architecture degree preferred. Master's degree highly preferred.

EXPERIENCE: 15+ years marine engineering experience, with a broad range of vessel types, with demonstrated increases of supervisory responsibility.

TECHNICAL PROFICIENCY: Proficient in Microsoft Office products, including Excel, Outlook, Teams and Word. Proficient in AutoCAD.

COMPETENCIES: Ability to apply skill sets and demonstrate proven experience developing, improving and streamlining processes to meet established goals and objectives. Ability to effectively manage projects that may vary in nature and scope. Ability to lead by example, work with people and inspire teams to higher technical performance. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to effectively manage multiple projects in various stages of completion that may vary in nature and scope. Ability to assess project risks and exposures; identify options and alternatives, make decisions and implement corrective actions, and communicate those decisions to senior management / customers. Ability to collaborate and establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal/external business partners. Ability to evaluate process effectiveness and develop change or alternatives. Ability to mentor, coach, train and/or supervise employees. Knowledge of project management, planning and cost control management. Knowledge of purchasing, procurement, budgeting and administrative management. Knowledge of and ability to apply the concepts, principles and practices of project designing, scheduling, estimating, planning, and inspecting. Advanced knowledge of the concepts, principles and practices of marine, mechanical and/or chemical engineering in regards to the projects assigned. Knowledge of contract negotiation and administration for commerical and government customers as well as the ability to execute contracts in compliance with corporate guidelines and government regulations.

OTHER: PE required. PE in State of Washington, or ability to obtain such, highly preferred

JOB SCOPE: Position impacts multiple business units/segments.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Works both inside an office environment and also outside in conditions of both high and low temperatures. May be exposed to odors, dust, dirt, mechanical hazards, high noise levels and potentially dangerous equipment. Must be able to crouch and stoop.

FLSA STATUS: The position is Exempt. May require the ability to work overtime to meet required deadlines. All work rules, including those that pertain to safety and health are expected to be respected and complied with.
