Compliance Manager

Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for ensuring ETS compliance of the entire BSM fleet
  • Emissions Monitoring and Reporting
    • Collaborate with the Fleet Performance team (FPC), who collect, verify and report the vessels consumptions and emissions data.
  • Commercial management
    • Develop and implement ETS service strategies for “Reporting and Communication”, “Carbon Allowance Management”, “Compliance Management”, “Guarantees and Insurance”  
    • Build a commercial management tool to track the ETS compliance services agreed with BSM’s customers, the carbon accounting records.
  • Carbon Allowance Management
    • Manage the company’s carbon allowance accounts, including the purchase, sale, and submission of allowances.
    • Build access to the relevant environmental markets, select trading partners, and execute trades for carbon credits.
    • Ensure that all transactions related to carbon allowances are accurately recorded and reported in accordance with commercial agreements, ETS regulations and deadlines. 
    • Monitor the company’s carbon allowance holdings to ensure that they are sufficient to compensate BSM’s emissions.
    • Develop and implement strategies for managing carbon allowances in the most cost-effective manner possible
  • Compliance Management
    • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of ETS regulations and monitor changes to the regulatory landscape.
    • Develop and maintain an internal compliance program to ensure that the company meets all its obligations under commercial agreements and ETS regulations.
    • Conduct regular compliance assessments and audits to identify any potential areas of non-compliance and implement corrective actions.
    • Ensure that all relevant staff are trained on ETS compliance obligations and are aware of their responsibilities
  • Stakeholder Management
    • Develop and maintain relationships with regulatory bodies, industry associations, and other stakeholders to stay informed of changes and emerging issues related to ETS compliance.
    • Represent the company in meetings with customers, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies.
    • Communicate with internal stakeholders, such as finance and operations, to ensure that ETS compliance is integrated into all aspects of the company’s operations
  • Reporting and Communication
    • Prepare and submit all required reports to customers, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies in accordance with the commercial agreements, regulations and deadlines.
    • Communicate regularly with management and other stakeholders on the company’s emissions performance and compliance status.
    • Participate in external events and forums related to ETS compliance to stay informed of industry best practices and emerging issues.
  • System Enhancements
    • Develop the Carbon Accounting System in PAL, our in-house IT Ecosystem

 

Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in law and economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Economics, Econometrics, Business, Finance, or a relevant field is required, with a master’s degree preferred.
  • Intelligent risk taker who enjoys analyzing and rethinking problems – at the same time the person is interested in turning ideas into action.
  • At least 3+ years of relevant experience in an environmental compliance or regulatory role, preferably in a regulated industry subject to ETS regulation.
  • Relevant experience in business development and carbon project experience
  • Proven track record within project accreditation process
  • Strong understanding of ETS regulations, including emissions monitoring and reporting, environmental markets, and compliance obligations
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and regulations and make sound recommendations based on this information.
  • Ability to work independently, with a high level of self-motivation and initiative.
  • Familiarity with carbon accounting software and data management systems is preferred.
  • Very good communication skills, with the ability to build relationships and influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Clear communicator in English, both written and spoken form, and able to structure ideas logically, communicate trade-offs, and explain complex technical concepts clearly.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and making decisions under uncertainty.
